Best Bread in the Business. Look No Further.
We all like to know where our food comes from…so here’s a bit about our long-term partner Hobbs House Bakery who make all our new pastries and some of our bread and cakes too.
In 2020 Hobbs House celebrated a remarkable 100 years of baking. Started by Thomas Herbert in 1920 when he turned his Down Ampney blacksmith workshop into a bakery. 10 decades later and still a family business with five generations of baking experience, handmaking exceptional bread, cakes and pastries everyday using classic family recipes. In fact, the Herbert family say they were born with flour on their fingers!
B Corp? Baked Right In
What’s more, they are the only British bakery to be a certified B Corporation, a global movement driving change in society through ethical and sustainable business. To become a certified B Corp, they needed to pass rigorous testing to prove they meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
All ingredients in their baking are sustainable and come from businesses within the local area. The most important ingredient; flour, is purchased from the local mill Shipton Mill, just a few miles away from the bakery in Chipping Sodbury.
Breaking Bread & Sharing Values
Hobbs House Bakery always try to do the very best for the environment and live by ethical and sustainable principles, including shunning plastic whenever possible in favour of compostable wax bags and efficiently recycling at least two thirds of non-bread waste. Whenever there is surplus bread waste, it goes to support several initiatives that fight hunger and tackle food waste by repurposing it to local communities such as food banks and homelessness charities.
They also support the Ifakara Bakery in Tanzania with a ‘buy one give one’ initiative. For every one of their award-winning gluten free loaves sold they donate one to children in need in Tanzinia, and so far have donated over 100,000!
